Simple phobias are those isolated single fears such as a fear of spiders, a fear of flying, a fear of being in an enclosed space.Complex phobias are multi-faceted. While there may have been one single activating event, the phobia may not be the real problem at all but rather a symptom of some deeper unresolved issues.  Often there is a strong emotional component related to the phobia, often stemming from
childhood. Usually the emotional issues must be resolved in order to
completely clear the phobiaNo matter what fear or phobia you have, and there are more than a thousand of them, you don't need anyone to tell you how restrictive
they can be. You may have tried facing up to them in the past, but
unless you were successful you probably now have a strategy of
avoidance. This in effect means that you will do anything to avoid
being confronted by the thing, event or situation that the phobia is
associated with.

What is Phobia Management?

Most phobias can be traced to an initial sensitising event (often
brought about by an action or reaction of another person, thought or
behaviour), which activates the phobia (fear of flying, spiders,
heights, small spaces, snakes etc). These can be separate events or
parts of the same event. The objective is to discover the cause(s) and
desensitise the individual from the fear by getting to the ‘route
cause’ then disassociating from it … so freeing oneself from the old
behaviour or emotion, even when life gets tough.
